How can computers be used to analyze natural language?

In this lesson, students will explore and perform mathematical text analysis using a technique that’s called “naïve bayes” (although we don’t call it that in the materials). The lesson begins with the concept of analyzing a text’s “sentiment” and builds towards a more formal approach that involves counting word frequencies in movie reviews. Along the way, students discuss the ethical implications of this technology and play with a hands-on sentiment analysis tool.
