What are the ethical issues with using my data?

In this lesson, students will explore data that is available about them online and debate ethical issues with using that data in algorithms.

Objectives:

  • Describe where data comes from, who uses it, and who is represented in commonly used datasets

  • Search for data about themselves that is publicly available on the internet (their “digital footprint”) and investigate the results further by following links to discover new information

  • Evaluate the privacy pros and cons of having machine learning algorithms train on publicly available data
