Student-Driven Design of Classroom AI Tools: A Hands-On Approach to AI Literacy and Future-Ready Skills
Many educators worry that irresponsible AI use in schools may erode students’ critical thinking and creativity. But what if AI could instead help build those skills—if students helped design the tools they use in the classroom? This interactive workshop introduces a student–teacher co-design approach for developing classroom AI tools. Participants will learn a design-based learning framework to guide students in building learning tools with AI while engaging with key ideas in AI literacy and responsible technology use. Through hands-on activities—including a design process mapping exercise based on the MathVoyagers project and a guided activity to prototype a collaborative classroom game using Lovable—participants will explore how co-design can reflect students’ needs and values while supporting skills such as design thinking, collaboration, problem-solving, and ethical awareness.
